The design and implementation of the new notification and benefit sharing mechanism associated with marine genetic resources (MGRs) of areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) to foster science, globally, is at the heart of the fair and equitable sharing of benefits in the BBNJ Treaty.
There are various benefits that are part of the MGRs of ABNJ element in the Treaty, ranging from access to information to monetary benefits.
The new MGR notification and benefit sharing requirements (MGR Mechanism) will impact a wide range of stakeholders, including the scientists and their home institusions, collections, and databases. The national governments that become Parties to the Treaty will have obgliations to introduce new legislative, administrative, and policy measures, as necesary, at the national level.
The MGR Mechanism and the other relevant elements of the BBNJ Treaty could foster science globally through enhanced collaboration, capacity development, and the transfer of marine technology. Such aspects of an MGR Mechanism are of great importance to all countries, but are especially for resource scarce countries. Further, monetary benefits generated through the MGR Mechanism will support conservation and sustainable use of ABNJ.
